So it’s that time of the year when you really get to enjoy your outside space. The temperature’s heating up and outdoor entertaining becomes a joy. That said you’ll want to make sure that your garden looks the best it can and one way to do this is by installing landscaping lighting. Here are some pointers…

Define your lighting purpose

Landscape lighting comes in a wide variety of guises so it’s important to define your illumination purpose. Do you want a soft romantic setting, or do you have a particularly dark corner you need to illuminate? Are you looking to light up a pathway or do you need feature lighting for illuminating ponds, pools and/or planting?

Do a quick lighting plan

By doing a quick sketch of your garden it’s easier to see exactly where you want your lighting to go. Use pole type lamps for highlighting pathways, or for a softer look, hide lighting in amongst shrubbery. Include all features including trees, buildings, planted areas, and pathways. Then draw in your lighting. Don’t forget to space them evenly as this way you’ll see exactly how many sets of lights you’ll need. Finally for best results look to mix and match different styles.

Decide on the type of outdoor lighting

How much effort are you looking to expand on your landscape lighting? For example, solar lighting is easy to install while 120v lighting needs cabling which is encased in conduit to protect it from the elements. This might also be swayed by your budget. Don’t forget that any lighting requiring extensive cabling is going to require the services of a licensed electrician and you could be looking at a combined cost of around $100 per light. On the flip side, solar lights mightn’t be as dramatic, but there’s no cabling and no installation costs to worry about.

What about garden lighting colours?

Landscape lighting doesn’t have to be purely white. Instead, if you shop around you’ll come across a wide variety of coloured lighting. For example, pale blue-tinted lighting gives off a moonlight-type hue, while soft peach lighting set in amongst planting or at pathway entrances gives a gentle relaxing glow. For best effect, try not to stick with one type. Colour variations can dramatically transform an outside space, giving it a real wow factor. Stronger spotlights for example are great for highlighting dining and entertaining areas and softer lighting in borders and corners give your garden a real depth.
