If you’re stuck with chunky under cupboard lighting such as fluorescent tubes which flicker and buzz before eventually powering up, then you’re probably in need of a modern replacement. The good news is that there are plenty of alternatives available which are both sleek and stylish and won’t break the bank. With this in mind, let’s take a closer look at three of the best.

Puck lighting

Puck lighting is fast becoming a popular alternative to fluorescent tubing and not without good reason. So-called because of their round hockey-puck shaped feature, they’re a great alternative for smaller kitchens that mightn’t necessarily have sufficient under cupboard lighting space beneath their cupboards for fluorescent tubing. There are two types to choose from. Firstly those that are hard-wired and plugged for a permanent fit; and secondly battery-operated models complete with LED bulbs that simply stick to the underside of your cabinet. Both provide adequate lighting, although the latter is often best for tenants looking to improve their kitchen lighting without having to be concerned about re-wiring; or for those looking for cost-saving measures.

Strip lighting

Although strip lighting looks similar to fluorescent tubing it’s much sleeker and can therefore sit discreetly under most cupboard space with no problems. In addition, unlike fluorescent tubing it can be fitted with LED’s. This is the most expensive option of under cupboard lighting, but bulbs last far longer than fluorescents, are safer, and also burn cool. It’s worth testing out the lighting before you buy, however, because some say that it can appear too white and therefore stark compared to other lights which give a warmer glow. Also, it’s a good idea to look for types that don’t require an external transformer, because that’s going to require more work and ultimately will cost more.

Rope lighting

The benefit of rope lighting is that it’s incredibly easy and quick to install. In addition, it’s also very thin so it’s unlikely to get knocked as you work at your counter. Ideally, it’s best used for complementing strong overhead lighting since it doesn’t give out a particularly powerful source of under cupboard lighting. However, it does work well as mood lighting, particularly in darker wood or granite kitchens because it comes in a wide spectrum of colours. When it comes to cost too, there’s good news. Rope lighting is cheap to buy as you can pick it up for as little as $6.00 per metre. You can also purchase as much or as little as you need, so costs can be kept to a minimum.
