As much as we all enjoy long hot summer days it’s equally as nice to have a cool home in which to escape from the searing heat should it become too much. However, apart from keeping the air conditioning on all day and running up a huge electricity bill, what other options are there?

We’ve put together a list of things that you can do to keep the inside of your home cool, so read on to find out more.

The heat from the outside can easily get into your house through cracks and gaps in the external walls, ceiling, and floor, so make sure these are all sealed to prevent that from happening.

If it doesn’t pose a security risk then fling open your windows at night and this will cool your house substantially.

Only use cooling systems as and when you need them. This means turning off A/C units when you leave the house and closing doors to rooms that aren’t in use.

Close your shutters, curtains, and outdoor window shades to shut out the sun and keep the heat out and the cool in

Make sure that your air conditioning unit is the right size for your room. If it’s too small it won’t cool down your room and if it’s too large it will result in inconsistent temperatures and higher running costs.

Use fans wherever you can instead of air conditioning units. They’re much cheaper and they produce a pleasant breeze.

Ideally, your aircon temperature should be set between 23-26º during the summer months. By lowering the temperature by just one degree it can cut the power you use by as much as 15%.

Make sure that you invest in a timer or programmable thermostat for your air conditioning so that you come home from work to a cool house without having had the A/c running all day long.

If the weather forecast predicts a really hot day then turn on your air-con before your home gets really hot.
