When we think of outdoor security lighting we imagine a bright light mounted on a a fixture that’s triggered by movement. That in effect is basically what they are. However there are other points you need to consider too. As there are a myriad of different designs, models, and styles of security light on the market, what exactly should you be looking for? Let’s investigate.
Consider where you want the light to shine
If for instance you’re looking to light up a large area brightly, then you might consider high level flood lighting. Conversely if you need lighting to shine light on pathways and stairs so that they can easily be navigated at night time then (almost) low level path or ground lighting should fit the bill perfectly. Finally if you only have a small area in front of your property then porch doorway lighting could work just as well.
Consider where they’re positioned
Clearly most outdoor lighting should be designed to function outdoors. However what you should take into consideration is that there are in fact varying degrees of rating depending upon where you’re lighting is positioned. For example if you need a security light that you’ve decided to place underneath the eves of your roof, then it should receive a fair bit of cover from the elements. In this case you might want to opt for ‘weather resistant’ lighting. If on the other hand your lighting isn’t likely to have much or indeed any cover at all then your preferred choice should be ‘water proof’ lighting. This type is generally more expensive but is necessary in this kind of situation.
Consider the type of bulbs used with automatic controls
Whether your lighting operates on a timer, a photocell, or indeed both, you’ll need to be aware that the varying bulbs that we use from halogens and LED’s through to CFL’s, can’t always be controlled using automated settings. Photocells for example won’t provide full power at first, so bulbs that need full power right away to function (eg, fluorescents) won’t function with these type of controls.
Apart from the styling perspective of course, if you consider these three important factors, then there’s no reason why you can’t have the perfect security lighting to fit your needs.
