Do You Need An Electrician? – Learn How To Choose The Right One Using 3 Simple Criteria
If you need the services of an electrician it’s really important to choose the right contractor with the quality and expertise to do the job properly. An inexperienced or amateur electrician may well end up creating more problems than they solve and more importantly, put you and your family and/or your home/business in danger.
Last year (2013) According to figures unearthed by ABC news, over 300 Australian citizens were hospitalised and 15 were killed because of home electrical accidents, nearly all of which could have been prevented through proper safety precautions. That said, how do you know that you are getting a contractor that will deliver the best and safest possible service? Here are some pointers….
The right skill levels for the job
It may sound pretty obvious that you should find a contractor with the skills and experience to carry out the task that you want them to do, but you’d be surprised at how often this is overlooked. For instance, if you’re looking to have a light fitted then that’s one thing, but if you’re after a complete home or premises rewire then clearly this requires more specialised skills. Firstly check their website (if they have one) to see if they mention the kind of work you want them to do, or alternatively check trader reviews for feedback. If you still can’t find any evidence that they carry out this particular type of work then don’t be afraid to ask them outright. Any reputable electrician will accept the fact that you need to find the right person for the job and will be more than happy to tell you about their experiences. Finally if all else fails, then word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and relatives are often the best solution.
Checking out credentials
You may not know that in Australia every electrician has to be licensed for the work that you’re proposing them to carry out. In addition it’s actually illegal for you to hire them to carry out work for which they aren’t licensed, so bear this in mind! Each state has their own licensing laws, so don’t be afraid to ask to see their credentials which should be relative to your state. Also check to see if they are members of a certified electrical body such as the National Electrical Communications Association (NECA), Electrical Contractors Association (ECA) or the Energy Supply Association of Australia (ESAA)
Whilst it isn’t always a prerequisite that the most expensive quote is going to deliver the highest standards of work, you should be wary of prices that appear too low. It may mean that the contractor is cutting corners in order to deliver the service cheaper, or (probably more likely) they are inexperienced and are unaware of the full scope of the work to be carried out. Either way you may want to avoid hiring based on prices that come in way under other quotes. Ideally you should get somewhere between 3-5 quotes for the job and make an informed hiring decision based on this and the other criteria mentioned.
